At a meeting with a large telecom networking company we turned to one of the senior managers and asked, "What really hurts?"

The answer was, "Our Configurator".
Business is growing and our salespeople need to be able to give accurate proposals quickly. But creating a technical proposal for a network is a complex task which involves gathering dozens of technical parameters, calculating and defining the network configuration and sizing information and outputting all of that into a professional proposal document.
We are currently using something that we built in-house based on Microsoft Excel and it is very problematic. The process must be repeated multiple times per sub-network, after which we need to aggregate the output of that process and put it into a Word document. We have no consistent template and the whole process is prone to human error. Our sales people are up in arms because we are not giving them the tool they need to do their job efficiently. We are actually losing sales because of this.
What Kind of Vendor Can Do All of This?
He explained that they didn't know who to turn to because solving this problem required:
- Technical Writing (for the proposal template)
- Marketing Writing (for the content of the sales proposal)
- Systems Analysis (to capture the proposal creation process and translate it into a GUI)
- Software development (to provide a tool to simplify the process and reduce human error)
- Project management (to pull it all together)
